The little girl with Nina Simone in the photo at the right is her daughter Lisa Celeste Stroud, aged nine, born on 12 September 1962. And the lady on the left is still Lisa, in a photo recently taken.
In the 80s Lisa was in the Air Force and stationed at Rhein Main Air Force Base in Frankfurt, Germany. After she left the Air Force she decided that she wanted to become a performer. She spent several years in the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". It was the 25th anniversary national tour with Ted Neeley who was the original actor who played Jesus in the movie and on stage. Lisa had changed her name to Simone at the time and she played the role of Mary.
Later, Lisa daughter was performing on a national tour of the hit musical Rent throughout America. She has been getting excellent reviews for her powerful voice and acting skills. She was also an understudy for the same Broadway production of "Rent".
She recently participated in two Disney theater workshops, playing the title role in Aida and Nala in The Lion King. Simone has toured the world, sung with Latin superstar Rafael and with many of Los Angeles' top musicians.
Simone left Rent on April 30, 1998, and now is a singer for the group Liquid Soul, a jazz band based in Chicago (click on biographies, then click on Simone). See also a review of the band on Boston Globe Online.
